HUGHES, WILLIAM MELOCH (1860 - 1926), colonist and writer ministry, but emigrated to Patagonia in 1881 because of ill-health; there he became a prominent member of the Welsh settlement, as teacher, farmer, tradesman, and preacher. Returning to Wales after forty years abroad, he died at Rhyl 28 March 1926, and was buried at Brithdir. His book Ar Lannau'r Camwy was published in 1927, and it contains his reminiscences and valuable material relating to the history
MATTHEWS, ABRAHAM (1832 - 1899), minister (Congl.) and one of the pioneers of the Welsh settlement in Patagonia Porth Madryn and the Camwy valley. Life was so hard by the end of 1866 that Matthews and seven others went to Buenos Aires to seek government assistance to move the Welsh settlers to the province of Santa Fe. The minister for Home Affairs, Dr. Rawson, pressed them to spend another year on the banks of the Camwy, and in April 1867 three of the eight returned to seek the views of their fellow- Welshmen
