DAVIES, HUGH EMYR
(1878 - 1950), minister (Presb.) and poet
Born 31 May 1878 at Brynllaeth, Aber-erch, Caernarfonshire, son of
Tudwal
and Annie Davies. He was educated at Pwllheli county school, Clynnog School, U.C.W., Aberystwyth and Bala College. He was ordained in 1909, and was a minister at Llanddona, Anglesey (1909-12), Lodge, Brymbo and Ffrith (1912-20), and Llanfechell, Anglesey (1920-29). He was an exceptional preacher, but it was as a poet that

he lived for a time on the island of S.
Tudwal
, off the Caernarvonshire coast, and preached in Llŷn and other places in Caernarvonshire. He wrote Welsh hymns and ballads. He died 16 December 1887.
PUGH, HUGH
(1794/5 - 1865), master mariner
Born at Liverpool in 1794/5. He was captain of the flat Ann (60 tons), which has been immortalized by J. Glyn Davies's ballad ' Fflat Huw Puw '; she was a Liverpool vessel, and he was master in 1840 or earlier, and part-owner. He traded chiefly between Runcorn, Liverpool, and Caernarvon. He moved to live at Caernarvon, and thence to the Barras, Llanidan. The flat was lost on the S.

Tudclyd ap Clynnog ap Dyfnwal Hen (Harl. MS. 3859; Cymm., ix, 173). According to the Saxon genealogies, Rhydderch Hen fought along with Urien (Rheged), Gwallawg, and Morgant against Hussa, king of Northumbria, c. 590. Adamnan (624 - 704) in his ' Life of S. Columba ' states that he was king of Alclyde (Dumbarton, near Glasgow) and that he was a friend of S. Columba (521 - 597
