Born 19 August 1886, eldest son of Joseph and Hannah Ashby,

He was educated in the village school and after leaving at the age of twelve he helped his father (who appears to have been a very remarkable man and a local leader) until he was 23 years old, when he gained a scholarship at Ruskin College, Oxford, in 1909.
