WILLIAMS, EDMUND
(1717 - 1742), early hymnist of the Methodist revival
He was a native of Cwmtillery, Monmouth, and one of the converts made by
Howel
Harris on his first preaching visit to Monmouthshire in March-April 1738. A churchman of good family and well-to-do, he was educated and devout, and under Harris's influence became a ' much respected exhorter among the Methodists.' He and Morgan John Lewis, his friend and fellow-convert, published a collection of Welsh

(1719 - 1748), Congregational minister and revivalist
Born 6 January 1719 at Abercrave, Brecknock - a brother to William Evans (1716 - 1770), Cwmllynfell. He came from a religious family. It is probable that he was at Joseph Simmons's school at Swansea or Neath. In the bitter controversy between Calvinism and Arminianism at Cwmllynfell he joined the party of

He and his brother, William, were exhorters in 1742-3 and the Methodist society met at their house. William (died 1746) married Ann Bowen of Tyddyn. Sarah, his sister, married Thomas James (died 1751), the Builth exhorter. In 1748

The surname was first adopted by his grandfather, Roger Williams (died 1583), who was sheriff of Monmouthshire in 1562 and was succeeded in the office in 1627 by his son, Sir Charles Williams; the latter, Sir Trevor's father, knighted in 1621, also represented the county in Parliament that year
WILLIAMS, WILLIAM
(1717 - 1791), Methodist cleric, author, and hymn-writer
Born in 1717 at Cefn-coed, Llanfair-ar-y-bryn, Carmarthenshire, son of John and Dorothy Williams. His father was a ruling elder in the Cefnarthen Independent church. He was educated, with a view to becoming a doctor, at Llwyn-llwyd Academy, but while he was there he heard
