The belief that he was a native of the southern part of Cardiganshire was challenged some years ago (Journal of the Welsh Bibliographical Society, iii, 275-90) and it is now believed that he was born in the parish of Cemaes, Montgomeryshire; he was possibly the John, son of David Roderick and

Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog, a fellow student in the college at Aberystwyth (1910-14) who taught Welsh at the girls' county school, Treforest, Pontypridd (1914-18) and at Ebbw Vale county school, Monmouthshire (1918-22). They had no children and she died in St. David's Hospital, Cardiff on 31 January
