GWERFUL MECHAIN (1462? - 1500), poetess All that is known of her is that she was the daughter of Hywel Fychan of Mechain in Powys, confirmation of which is to be found in a cywydd written by Dafydd Llwyd, who sent Llywelyn ap Gutun to her with an expression of his love. It is known that bits of her poems were still preserved in the memory of country folk as late as the 19th century, for both Ap Vychan and Sir Owen M. Edwards refer to
GWYNN, HARRI (1913 - 1985), writer and broadcaster Eisteddfod Gorsedd, as was routinely the case with former General Secretaries. (Hywel Teifi Edwards brought this story to light years later.) Harri had to wait for decades before Gorsedd membership was eventually agreed. HARRI MASTR (fl. 15th century), poet of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire. He was apparently in holy orders, but no proof has yet been found to support the statement that he was the parson of Llandyfaelog. His name is given as Harri (ap) Hywel in some manuscripts, including Havod MS. 3, ' Syr ' Harri ap Rhys in NLW MS 566B, while Cwrtmawr MS 200B gives him as (Mastr) Harri ap Hywel alias Harri Hir. HARRIES, HYWEL (1921 - 1990), art teacher, artist, cartoonist Hywel Harries was born in Tumble, Carmarthenshire, 7 October 1921, the son of David John Harries and his wife Sarah Ann. He was educated locally and at Gwendraeth grammar school. He showed his artistic talent early and went to Llanelli Art School but he joined the RAF at the start of World War 2 in 1941 and served for five years. HOWELL, JOHN (Ioan ab Hywel, Ioan Glandyfroedd; 1774 - 1830), weaver, schoolmaster, poet, editor, and musician NLW MS 19B. He is probably the 'Ioan ab Hywel' some of whose work is found in NLW MS 1238B (a Thomas Edwards, Twm o'r Nant MS.) He died 18 November 1830, and was buried in the churchyard of Llandingat, Llandovery.
