WILLIAMS, FOULK ROBERT
(Eos Llyfnwy; 1774 - 1870), musician
Born at Hendreforion-bach, Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire, (and christened 6 October 1774), the son of Robert William, weaver, and Lowry his wife. Owing to his gift as a singer he came to be called ' Ffowc bach y canwr '; later he was known as Foulk Roberts. When he was 17 he received music lessons for a period of three months from John Williams (

(Hywel Cernyw; 1843 - 1937), Baptist minister, writer, and poet
Wales and Monmouth, 1892-3. In 1932 the University of Wales honoured him with the degree of D.D. He wrote a large number of hymns. He was for a time editor of Seren Gomer, the Greal, and Yr Athraw. him a friend of men of the calibre of Joseph Loth of the University of Rennes, and E. B. Cowell of Cambridge. He is reputed to have given the latter considerable help with his translations into English of the poems of Dafydd ap Gwilym.

Mai wrote many poems in the free metres, some of them for competition at various eisteddfodau, but although his unfinished essay on 'The characteristics of Welsh

alone. He died at Fron Heulog, Waun-fawr, 3 October 1874, and was buried in Betws Garmon churchyard.

Arfon and other friends of his collected fifty pounds to provide a suitable tomb-stone and this was unveiled, 7 March 1879. In 1904 his son, Thomas Williams, published some of his works, together with the story of his life, in Gemau Gwyrfai; and in 1911, he published another book, Gemau Môn ac
WILLIAMS, THOMAS
(Gwilym Morgannwg; 1778 - 1835), poet
a youth. When he was about 27 years of age he went to London where, however, he only stayed some six months. On his return he was employed by Rhys, son of Hywel Rhys, and it may be inferred that it was the teaching which he was given by, his master which enabled him to write, in co-operation with John Jenkins (1779 - 1853) of Hengoed, the first version of Y Parthsyllydd, 1815-6.
