ROBERTS, RICHARD ARTHUR
(1851 - 1943), archivist and editor
Born 13 May 1851 at Carmarthen, son of J.N. Roberts and Margaret (née
Jones
) his wife. He was educated in private schools and in 1872 was appointed clerk at the Public Record Office. In 1879 he was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple. He was promoted assistant keeper at the P.R.O. in 1903, and from 1912 until his retirement in 1916 he was principal assistant keeper and secretary of the Office

(1777 - 1836), almanack-maker and printer
Born in 1777, son of John Roberts (Siôn Robert Lewis) whom he succeeded as the publisher and compiler of the popular Holyhead almanacks known as Cyfaill Glandeg, Cyfaill Taeredd, etc., for the years 1805 to 1837. These almanacks were printed by John

of Trefriw under a fictitious Dublin imprint in order to avoid Government tax. He also published Eurgrawn Môn, neu y Drysorfa Hanesyddol, 1825

(1821 - 1879; see Spinther, iv, 327-9) were cousins. He received very little education as a child nor was he given any college training after he had started to preach. He was baptised at the age of 12 and began to preach in 1839. He spent a short time as a missionary for the Caernarvonshire

had been secured. He still strove against trade unionism and state aid in education, but his influence had passed its heyday. His arguments against voting by ballot, on the grounds that it savoured of cowardice, were not popular. ). His father was a Methodist minister at Capel Penucheldref and writer of a weekly column in Y Goleuad. His mother was a teacher at the local school, the schoolhouse also being the Roberts family residence. He attended Beaumaris County School until he won a
