Born 16 June 1814 at Segar farm, Henllan, near Denbigh. He lost his mother when he was 4 years of age and was brought up at Bron-haul, Henllan, by an uncle. He was apprenticed to a painter at S. (1899 - 1968), botanist and grassland specialist
was awarded the degrees of M.Sc. (1925) and D.Sc. (1945) of the University of Wales and was awarded an honorary D.Sc. degree by the University of New Zealand in 1956. He was honoured with the C.B.E. in 1964, and was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, and honorary life president of the European Grassland Federation. He married in 1928
