Born 1 June 1877, at Penbont-fach, Tregaron, Cardiganshire, son of John Rowland and Margaret, his wife. He was educated at the Technical College, Cardiff, and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. On leaving college in 1904 he taught at Cardiff, and identified himself with Welsh religious and cultural movements there. He attracted the notice of David Lloyd
