Hugh Swrdwal who is said to have been granted the manor of Aberyscir for services rendered to Bernard Newmarch when the latter conquered Brecknock (Theophilus

A native apparently of Glyn Ceiriog, Denbighshire. Nothing is known about him, but a number of cywyddau and englynion composed by him, c. 1594 to 1610, have survived. He wrote poems to various contemporary North Wales gentry, including Owain Holant of Plas Berw, Anglesey, Hwmffrai ap Huw of Gwerclys, Rhobert

He was voted political and social cartoonist of the year by the Cartoonists' Club of Great Britain in 1962, was first President of the British Cartoonists' Association in 1966 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Kent in 1975
