SEFNYN
(fl. second half of the 14th century), poet
He sang the praises of Tudur
ap
Goronwy of Trecastell and Penmynydd (died 1367), and an elegiac awdl on his fellow Anglesey poet, Iorwerth ab y Cyriog, who fl. around 1360. He also sang the praises of the wives of his patrons, such as Angharad, ' Dafydd's spouse.' His work has survived only in a confused state in the manuscripts. He was probably the father of the poet Gwilym
ap
Sefnyn.
SEIRIOL
(fl. c. 500- c. 550), founder and first abbot of Penmon church
son of Owain Danwyn ab Einion Yrth
ap
Cunedda Wledig, and so a second cousin of king Maelgwn Gwynedd and of the same age as the latter. According to Anglesey tradition, he was a great friend of Saint Cybi. Seiriol was the chief saint of the Dindaethwy district in Anglesey and also of Penmaenmawr, Caernarfonshire; his feast day, according to the earliest calendars, was 1 February
SEISYLL ap CLYDOG
(fl. 730), king of the combined realm of Ceredigion and Ystrad Tywi
According to early pedigrees he was a descendant of Ceredig
ap
Cunedda Wledig who is assumed to have been the first Brythonic ruler of Ceredigion to which he gave his name. At first king only of Ceredigion, Seisyll later added to his kingdom those parts of ancient Dyfed known as Cantref Mawr, Cantref Bychan, and Cantref Eginog, or collectively as Ystrad Tywi. Hence the name Seisyllwg was often
SEISYLL BRYFFWRCH
(1155 - 1175), poet
The earliest known event in his career is the bardic contest against Cynddelw for the office of chief court poet to Madog
ap
Maredudd
, prince of Powys (died 1160). The englynion of this contest are to be found in the Hendreg. MS. (71b-72a) and in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales (154a) Seisyll declares in one of these englynion that he is of the stock of Culfardd, who is probably to be
SHANKLAND, THOMAS
(1858 - 1927), bibliophile and historian
of his being lost in the world of birds, insects, molluscs, and fishes. Perhaps the great turning point of his life was his visit (October 1900) to the old home of Joshua Thomas the historian at Leominster, and examining the manuscripts that still remained there. But before that, in 1898-9, four articles of his had appeared in Seren Cymru on Morgan John
Rhys
; then came three articles in Cymru for
SIANCYN FYNGLWYD
(fl. c. 1470), poet
A native, presumably, of South Wales. Nothing is known of his life, but a few of his poems remain in manuscript. These include two cywyddau to Sir
Rhys
ap
Thomas of Dynevor when he was a young man (Peniarth MS 83 (70), Llanstephan MS 30 (435)). His son, Dafydd Fynglwyd, was also a poet.
SILS ap SION
(fl. end of the 16th century), bard
To judge by one reference in his cywydd on husbandry, it may be thought that he lived (as Iolo Morganwg maintained) not far from the confines of Radyr and Llandaff. One book of pedigrees refers to a Sils
ap
Siôn who lived in the commote of Miskin - it is possible that this may have been the bard. A small collection of his work and that of some of his contemporaries, is preserved (probably in his

the group of copyists greatly influenced by Iaco ab Dewi. His most celebrated manuscript, 'Tlysau'r Beirdd' (NLW MS 5474A) was written between 1747 and 1751, and his well-known collection of Dafydd

Gwilym's works (NLW MS 5475A) in 1754. Some of his other manuscripts are in the Cardiff City Library and at Oxford. His books and manuscripts were bought by Thomas Evans (Tomos Glyn Cothi) in 1790, and

containing his genealogical collections is in the Cardiff Public Library, and there are several other manuscripts containing his work in the various libraries. Some of his cywyddau have been published, his 'pattern' awdl to Piers Mostyn, which he showed at the Caerwys eisteddfod of 1568, is printed in the grammar, (1592), of Siôn Dafydd
