Vaughan Williams was born on 9 November 1940 in Bangor, Gwynedd, the only child of Griffith Williams (b. 1910), and his wife Katherine (née Turner, 1910-1968). He was educated at Friars grammar school in Bangor before studying journalism in Cardiff, and then worked for a number of magazines and provincial newspapers around the country until he joined the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
