ROBERTS, JOHN JOHN
(Iolo Caernarfon; 1840 - 1914), Calvinistic Methodist minister, poet, and prose-writer
Wales Association in 1906, and '

Lecturer ' in 1907, and indeed figured conspicuously in the administration of his connexion; but he was at his best as a preacher and a public speaker. He wrote much poetry, won the crown at the national eisteddfod twice (1890, 1892), and quite a number of prizes for poems of various kinds; and he adjudicated in the 'crown' competitions on several occasions. Roberts, Garthmorthin, Treflys, between Portmadoc and Criccieth, Caernarfonshire - he hailed from the family of ' Dafydd y Garreg Wen '. When he was about 20 years of age, he went to live at Ty-mawr, Treflys, the home of Griffith Roberts, an uncle, and spent the remainder of his days there, unmarried. He was a zealous member of the Cefnymeusydd literary society - see Ellis

Since John Parry ('Bardd Alaw') referred to him in 1808 as a very good harpist who had been collecting the works of the poets for many years, 1769 should be accepted as his year of birth, as given by R. Griffith in Cerdd Dannau. According to M.

(Meurig Idris) he was born in the commote of Ardudwy, Merioneth, but John Parry (Bardd Alaw) said that his birthplace was Cefn-y-mein, Llŷn

He went to Bala to Lewis Edwards for two years, 1847-9, and then for two years more was a private tutor in Anglesey before being admitted to the training college at Caernarvon. He obtained his certificate there, and taught at Castle Caereinion and Llanllechid (1853), Amlwch, and

Born 24 May 1840 at Tanysgafell, Bethesda, Caernarfonshire. He was 12 when his father died and he began to work in a quarry. He was taught the rudiments of music by Owen Humphrey

(Eos Llechid). Henry Samuel Hayden then gave him some instruction and the boy was admitted, when he was 14, to the training college at Caernarvon where Hayden taught; he afterwards followed Hayden in his post. In
