In 1874 he left the local school at the age of 12 to commence work as an office-boy with the Ocean Coal Co.; he rose to become general manager in 1926, retiring in 1933. Born 8 September 1896 at Norton Arms, Widnes, Lancashire, one of the seven children of Edmund Valentine and Caroline (née Hawkins) Tilley.
