Eleanor was youngest child and the only surviving daughter of Simon de Montfort, earl of Leicester (c. 1208-1265) and his wife, Eleanor (1215?-1275), countess of Pembroke and Leicester. Eleanor's brothers were

Ordained in that year, his first curacy was Connah's Quay, which he resigned in the following year on being appointed inspector of Church schools in the diocese of Bangor, a diocese of which he was to become one of the leading figures.
