Born 13 November 1820 at Carmarthen, son of Richard

, seaman. He began to preach at Mount Pleasant, Swansea, and ministered to the congregation at Bethel, Strand, Swansea, before he went to Bristol College in October 1842. Early in 1844 he went to Jamaica as a missionary, but after the death of his wife and her baby he returned to Bristol in 1845. From early 1846 until his death, 22 November
