GRUFFUDD ap DAFYDD FYCHAN (fl. 15th century), poet Of Tir Iarll in Glamorganshire He is apparently the person referred to as 'Gruffudd mydrydd a enwir gŵr o Fetws Tir Iarll' whose pedigree is given by G. T. Clark in Limbus Patrum, 510. A number of his cywyddau have been preserved, including an elegy on the death of Henry VI, a number of vaticinatory poems, and three love poems, two poems composed by Llywelyn Goch y Dant and Gruffydd ap Dafydd
GRUFFUDD ap MAREDUDD ap DAFYDD (fl. 1352-1382), poet
GRUFFUDD ap NICOLAS (fl. 1415-1460), esquire and a leading figure in the local administration of the principality of South Wales in the middle of the 15th century 1453. Some maintain that it lasted three months at his cost at Dynevor and others state that it lasted a fortnight and that it was held at Carmarthen. It is agreed that Gruffudd ap Nicolas was judge over the poets, and that the chair was awarded to Dafydd ab Edmwnd. It is pretty certain also that the eisteddfod revised the bardic metres and regulated the bardic fraternity. In 1454-5, the castle of
GRUFFUDD DAFYDD DDU (fl. c. 1500?), poet
GRUFFUDD GRYG (fl. second half of the 14th century), bard date within that period? It is certain that Gruffudd was a contemporary, for some years, of Dafydd ap Gwilym, as there was a well-known bardic 'controversy' between the two. Dafydd's floruit was probably 1340-70; assuming that Gruffudd did not write the poem to Einion until 1360 and that he continued to write until 1412 that would give the period 1360-70 as a possible period of association between
GRUFFUDD HAFREN (fl. c. 1600), poet Davies of Mallwyd (NLW MS 5269B (393b, 405)), and elegies to the two poets, Siôn Phylip (NLW MS 799D (40)) and Thomas Penllyn (Cwrtmawr MS 11B (189)). A bardic controversy or ymryson, took place - Rhisiart Phylip and Gruffudd Hafren against Siôn Phylip and Ieuan Tew (Llanstephan MS 133 (497-500)); and a shorter one occurred between Roger Cyffin and Gruffudd (Cwrtmawr MS 206B (101)). GRUFFUDD HIRAETHOG (bu farw 1564), bard and herald the 16th century, such as Simwnt Fychan, Wiliam Llŷn, Wiliam Cynwal, Siôn Tudur and Raff ap Robert having been his disciples. Some of these men came into possession of his manuscripts after his death. Gruffudd Hiraethog best exemplifies the interest in heraldry which was characteristic of the bards of his period, and extensive collections of pedigrees made by him still remain such as Peniarth MS 132
GRUFFUDD LEIAF (fl. 15th century), poet A native of Denbighshire, son of Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Goch, who traced his descent from Owain Gwynedd. (Peniarth MS 127 (17)). An englyn written by him is found in Cwrtmawr MS 242B (1) and NLW MS 6499B (1). A cywydd to the owl is also attributed to him in some manuscripts, e.g. Cardiff MS. 64 (552), and Esgair MS. 1 (37); but the same poem bears the name of Dafydd ap Gwilym, and
GRUFFUDD LLWYD ab IFAN (fl. 1564), poet nothing is known about his life, but it appears from one of his poems that he lived in Anglesey. Some of his work remains in manuscripts, and this includes cywyddau to Elis Prys of Plas Iolyn (NLW MS 1247D (22)), Ieuan ap Siôn ap Maredudd of Bryncyr (NLW MS 5282B (49)), and Tudur ap Rhobert of Berain (NLW MS 6495D (118b, 120 - in the poet's hand apparently)). In addition to his poetry of praise
GRUFFUDD LLWYD ap DAFYDD ab EINION LLYGLIW (fl. c. 1380-1410), a poet with Welsh literature and folklore, he was entertained at some of the famous courts of his period. His work includes poems to Owain Glyndŵr, Sir David Hanmer, Owain ap Maredudd of Neuadd Wen, and Hywel and Meurig Llwyd of Nannau, love and religious poetry, and it is now certain that he is the author of the poem to send the sun to greet Glamorgan, which has also been attributed to Iolo Goch and Dafydd
