Beatrice Green was born on 1 October 1894 at Abertillery, Monmouthshire, the seventh of eight children of William and

Dykes. Her father was a tin worker who became a miner when she was 5 years old. One of her brothers, John Arthur Dykes, was killed in a roof fall in Rose Heyworth colliery, Abertillery in 1910, aged 19. Beatrice's introduction to public life came through the Ebenezer Baptist
