HUW LLŶN (fl. c. 1552-1594), poet A native of Llŷn, who graduated in the third bardic grade at the Caerwys eisteddfod of 1568 - Peniarth MS 132 (59). It appears that he may have been a brother of Wiliam Llŷn (NLW MS 1244D (28), NLW MS 1580B (308), Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies, ix, 112, etc.). According to Myrddin Fardd, J. E. Griffith, and J. C. Morrice, he was the squire Huw ap Rhisiart ap Dafydd of Cefn Llanfair, but
HUW MACHNO (fl. 1585-1637), poet Son of Owen ap Ieuan ap Siôn of Penmachno, Caernarfonshire, descended from Dafydd Goch of Penmachno, an illegitimate son of David, prince of Wales. His mother was Margaret, daughter of Robert ap Rhys ap Hywel. The date of his birth is not known, but he is said to have died in 1637, and a gravestone inscribed ' H.M. obiit 1637,' in Penmachno churchyard, is believed to be his. He appears to have
HUW PENNAL (fl. 15th century), poet a native, apparently, of Pennal in Merioneth. Some examples of his work remain in manuscript, including cywyddau to Wiliam Herbert, earl of Pembroke, Dafydd ap Rhys of Llangurig, the three sons of Ieuan Blayney of Gregynog, and two love poems. No details regarding his life are to be found, but it is obvious that the dates given him in Blackwell, and W. Owen, Cambrian Biog. are too late.
HUW, THOMAS (fl. c. 1574-1606), poet a native apparently of North Wales. Some examples of his work, in strict metres, are preserved in manuscript, including poems of praise to Harri Wyn of Anglesey and Siôn Wyn Amhorys (Brogyntyn MS. 6 (157b); Llanstephan MS 11 (21), an elegy to Richard Lloyd of Llannerch Fawr in Llŷn (Llanstephan MS 123 (114)), a poem seeking reconciliation with youth (NLW MS 783B (128)), another in reply to a poem
HYWEL ab EINION LLYGLIW (fl. 1330-1370), poet and uncle to Gruffudd Llwyd ap Dafydd ab Einion Llygliw. Nothing is known about him, but his love poem addressed to Myfanwy Fychan of Castell Dinas Bran, Llangollen, is preserved in NLW MS 1553A (275), NLW MS 4973B (369b), NLW MS 6209E (216), and published in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales; for an English translation see T. HYWEL ap 'Syr' MATHEW (bu farw 1581), poet, genealogist, and soldier A native of the Teme valley in Radnorshire. His poetry includes cywyddau written to bishop Richard Davies, William Herbert, earl of Pembroke, Mathew ap Morus of Ceri, Siencyn ap Dafydd of Llanarthney, and an awdl to Lewys Gwyn of Glyn Nedd (Neath) (Llanstephan MS 133 (71, 712), Llanstephan MS 30 (384); Hafod MS. 13 (197); Brogyntyn MS. 2 (529)). We learn from the late 16th century copy of his
HYWEL ap DAFYDD ap IEUAN ap RHYS (fl. c. 1450-1480) Raglan, poet (Neath) and members of the Herbert family of Pembroke and Raglan. It appears from one of the two bardic controversies between him and Guto'r Glyn that he was family poet at Raglan. Other ymrysonau were composed between Bedo Brwynllys and Hywel, and also between Gruffudd ap Dafydd Fychan, Llywelyn Goch y Dant and Hywel. HYWEL ap DAFYDD LLWYD ab Y GOF (fl. c. 1500), poet nothing is known of his life, but some examples of his work remain in manuscript, these being love poems and an elegy to the poet Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.
HYWEL ap GRUFFYDD (bu farw c. 1381) Tanglwst, daughter of one Dafydd Fychan ap Hywel; there was one son, Gruffydd, who left no direct heirs. But several old Eifionydd families traced their descent from his elder brother, Einion.
HYWEL ap RHEINALLT (fl. c. 1471-1494), poet whose work is well represented in existing manuscripts. It includes a large number of poems to members of various landed families of North Wales, including those of Ynys y Maengwyn, Coetmor, Clenennau, and Emral; he wrote a poem in praise of Dafydd ab Owain, abbot of Strata Marcella. A number of his love poems and his bardic controversy with Lewys Môn are also preserved; a reference is made to
HYWEL BANGOR (fl. 1540), an itinerant bard englynion in Llanstephan MS 41, but the relationship between the date and the text is not clear. If Peniarth MS 267 (54) is correct in attributing to him an englyn to the son of Dafydd ab Edmwnd, when he had sold his lands except the mere of Hanmer, he was composing much earlier in the century, for Edward ap Dafydd was disposing of his property between 1486 and 1515. The first part of Peniarth MS 179 was
IEUAN ap BEDO GWYN (fl. c. 1530-1590?), poet and owner of the Llysyn estate, Llanerfyl, Montgomeryshire, before its purchase by the Herbert family; descendant of one of the younger branches of the family of Neuadd Wen (a neighbouring estate), and therefore of Maredudd, brother of Gruffudd ap Cynan. A little only of his work remains, and this includes a cywydd written to Dafydd ap Ieuan Llwyd of Nantmynach, in 1538.
