Wil Sam was born on 28 May 1920 at Belle Vue, Llanystumdwy, the younger of the two sons of Gabriel Jones, mariner, and his wife Ann (née
Owen
). His brother Elis Gwyn (1918-1999) was a well-known artist and author, and he worked closely with Wil Sam in the theatre. Their father died in an accident at sea in 1939. Wil Sam's formal education took place at the Church School in Llanystumdwy and
