HUGHES, RICHARD (c. 1565 - 1619), poet Son of Huw ap Rhisiart ap Dafydd of Cefn Llanfair, Caernarfonshire. (Huw Llŷn, sometimes confused with Huw ap Rhisiart, was a different person.) He went to London, joined the army, and it may be deduced from one of his englynion that he took part in 1596 in the successful British attack on the port of Cadiz in Spain - being one of the 150 Caernarvonshire Welshmen involved in that enterprise. HUGHES, STEPHEN (1622 - 1688), early Nonconformist publication of Welsh books for the use of the peasantry. He issued the first part of the work of Rhys Prichard (of Llandovery) in 1659 and the second part (although no copy is extant) appeared shortly afterwards. HUGHES, WILLIAM (bu farw 1600), bishop of St Asaph Born in Caernarvonshire, he was the son of Hugh ap Cynwric. Entering Queens' College, Cambridge, in November 1554, he became B.A. 1556-7, Fellow of Christ's College 1557, M.A. 1560, B.D. and Lady Margaret preacher 1565, and D.D. 1569. HUGHES, WILLIAM BULKELEY (1797 - 1882), Member of Parliament Born 26 July 1797, eldest son of Sir William Bulkeley Hughes of Plas Coch, Llanidan, Anglesey, and Brynddu, Llanfechell, and Elizabeth, daughter and co-heiress of Rice Thomas of Coed Alun, Caernarvon.
