May 1803, at Trawsfynydd. As a young man he kept school at Ffestiniog, where he began to preach. In 1823 he moved to Llanelltyd, near Dolgelley, and again in 1824 to Machynlleth. As ' Thomas Hughes, Machynlleth ' he soon became known throughout Wales as a popular preacher who could appeal to the emotions; himself a 'tearful' preacher, he made his hearers weep.
