This family traces its descent from Gwaeth-foed, lord of Ceredigion, etc. The first member to be associated with the northern part of the county of Cardigan, i.e., with Gogerddan, was probably RHYS AP DAVID LLOYD (Burke, Peerage, Baronetage …, 1936 ed.), to whom poems were written by various bards, e.g.,

Born in 1679 at Hendre, Blaenpennal, Cardiganshire. His father was also Philip Pugh, while his mother, Ann, was a daughter of

Jones of Coedmor and a step-sister, on her mother's side, of Peregrine Musgrave, the Haverfordwest Quaker. Pugh was educated at Brynllywarch Academy and later, after the death of Samuel Jones in 1697, at Abergavenny. In 1709 he was ordained joint minister with David

As he composed an elegy on the death of Tudur Aled (c. 1526), and as another of his cywyddau is dated 1582 in one manuscript, it would appear that he lived to an advanced age; this is borne out in the elegy upon him by

Labour trade unionism was growing in the valleys of Glamorgan at this time and Ebenezer Rees was prominent in this movement in the upper Swansea valley.
