Recorde was born in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, the second of two sons of Thomas Recorde of Tenby and Ros Johns, daughter of Thomas ap John ap Sion, of Machynlleth. This was a second marriage for Thomas, the first to Joan Ysteven of Tenby being of short duration and childless.
