LOVELAND, KENNETH
(1915 - 1998), journalist and music critic
Welsh composers - especially Daniel Jones, William Mathias and Alun Hoddinot. He also (probably with justification) claimed to have given the first press recognition to outstanding singers such as Geraint
Evans
, Gwyneth Jones and Margaret Price. Such advocacy might have been dismissed as the parochialism of a local reporter, but this never applied to Loveland, uprightly Home Counties to the core and
LUMLEY, RICHARD
(1810 - 1884), Calvinistic Methodist minister
Born 23 October 1810, at Aberystwyth, eldest of the eleven children of Edward Lumley, builder. He was educated in the well-known school kept by John
Evans
(1796 - 1861) in that town, and afterwards in the little grammar school at Llanfihangel-genau'r-glyn - in both, Lewis Edwards was his fellow-pupil and the two became intimate friends. He began to preach in 1829 and opened a (not too successful
MACKWORTH, Sir HUMPHREY
(1657 - 1727), industrialist and parliamentarian
January 1683. In 1686 (settlement dated 16 June) he married Mary, daughter of Sir Herbert
Evans
of Gnoll, Neath, Glamorganshire, who became her father's sole heiress on the death of her sisters. (She herself died before July 1696). On his marriage, Mackworth settled at Neath. His wife's grandfather, David

, as well as her father, had obtained leases which virtually gave them a monopoly in the

MADDOCKS, ANN
(the Maid of Cefn Ydfa; 1704 - 1727)
lawyer of Cwmrisga, who compelled her to marry his own son Anthony; but William Thomas's will does not mention the wardship. Ann and Anthony junior did indeed marry, 4 May 1725, and their marriage-contract is extant. She died in 1727 (buried 6 June). With the above facts (correctly stated by T. C.
Evans
, in his Hist. of Llangynwyd) tradition has interwoven a romantic story, for which no evidence has
MAREDUDD ap RHOSER
(fl. c. 1530), poet
who may have been a native of South Wales. No proof is available for connecting him, as Iolo Morganwg did, with Meisgyn (Miskin) in Glamorgan. Examples of his work exist in MSS., including a love poem, an awdl in praise of Ewyas, an elegy to Sir Charles Herbert, another to reconcile William Herbert of Colebrook with William Siôn ap Rhoser of Wern-ddu, and poems in praise of William

MATHIAS, WILLIAM JAMES
(1934 - 1992), composer and teacher

Evans

MAURICE, HENRY
(1634 - 1682), Independent minister
. Bishop Lucy in 1673 refers to him as 'one Morrice' who brought the Puritan invasion up to the gates of Brecon; the columns of the Sheldon census in 1676, with 682 sectaries numbered in the county (of whom the great majority were Independents), are proofs of his crusading activities; and the Independent churches of Brecknock enumerated in the 'Lists' of Dr. John

The son of a tailor at Llanddewi-Velfrey, Pembrokeshire, and himself a tailor, according to the unkindly taunt of Jeremy Owen. He became a member of Henllan Amgoed congregation, then went to William
Evans

MAURICE, WILLIAM

). Contemporary problems also engaged his attention, and, in 1653, he wrote a treatise against altar-worship in which he criticised the work of Dr. George Griffith, afterwards bishop of St Asaph, and Richard Jervis, vicar of his own parish. He is also said to have compiled a chronicle of the events of the Civil War in North Wales. Evan
