Ben T. Hopkins was born on 3 December 1897 at Waunhelyg, Lledrod, Ceredigion, the son of Ifan Hopkins (1851-1931), carpenter, and his wife

(née Jones, 1859-1897). His mother died a week after his birth and he was brought up by his mother's sister and brother, Margaretta Jones (1867-1944) and Dafydd Jones (1854-1929), at Triael, Blaenpennal, a smallholding which is now a ruin. His father
